Messages of Saturn

Saturn is traditionally considered a malefic planet, or, in ordinary language, the planet that is associated with the experiences of restriction, delays, and limitation of pleasure and even life, in some cases, while at the same time being a great teacher of moderation, concentration, responsibility, and hard work.

People have different experiences with Saturn depending on how much of Saturn's energy one has in the chart. For someone with a strongly placed Saturn, ambition, responsibility, ability to focus and work with concentration are easy. Still, Saturn inclines to solitude and isolation from others, it is cold and dry by nature and does not incline to warm exchange or expansion, like Venus or Jupiter would.

This year, I experienced a transiting opposition of Saturn in Libra to my natal Sun. This transit coincided with a completion of my dissertation and the 6-year-long journey through a graduate program in psychology. The following is the summary of the themes I experienced during the Saturn transit:

* Needing to rely on myself, while longing for emotional support and warmth which were frequently not available.

* Having to redo, refine and improve my work multiple times, which felt at times excessive and unnecessary, but in the long run made my work much more solid and in-depth.

* Coming to a conflict between my desires and aspirations of how my work should be done and expressed (Sun in Aries) and the demands and visions of others (Saturn in Libra).

* Feeling pressure to refine and complete my work, not as a pleasurable activity (which in in itself it was) but as a serious and extremely detail laden project that required all my ability to concentrate and focus on one task at hand.

While these themes are specific to my process of dissertation writing and completion, I feel they are worth sharing because they represent more general experience of Saturn, which is some serious professional or personal accomplishment resulting not without frustration from repetitious hard work, and enormous attention to details while often feeling restricted or unsupported or even pressured. The metaphoric image that came to mind in regards to Saturn Sun opposition was of a cold iron just going back and forth over me (as Saturn went 3 times over my Sun due to retrograde motion), cold and heavy, but ultimately "straightening" my work.

I would be interested in hearing from others how they understand and experience Saturn transits, so I welcome posts or personal e-mail in response to this blog.

hello your articles are very nice and informative. but i think on transite vedic astrology is more effecive . vedic astrology can predict very well effect of transit w.r.t. personal life, carrier , family matters etc.

Thank you for your comment, ghanshyam! In this blog I am sharing my personal experience and general ideas about Saturn transits. This post is not meant to illustrate all possible influences which are better derived from analyzing one's birth chart, and how Saturn placed in it, and hence how the transits of Saturn will affect the native. I agree that Vedic astrology provides powerful information for transits or other details of one's life, but, in my experience, Western astrology has the same level of detail and in-depth knowledge, if one uses traditional principles.
